What process do you use to "vet" your volunteers, particularly those working with minors? What resources do you use for background checks, if you do them? Do they work well?
Our church wants to set this up and I'm curious what others are doing.
Any and all infor will be helpful. Thanks!
One of my all-time favorite quotes, attributed to Abraham Lincoln: "Better to be silent and thought a fool; than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Does NO ONE doe this? In light of the fatality in Missouri yesterday, perhaps we should all consider it?!
I'm running down various rabbit trails currently. A couple sources I'm looking into are as follows...
Option 1: Group Publishing sub-group: CVC (ChurchVolunteerCentral.com) - sign up for $119/yr. which includes 2 free background checks along with other resources. They have a list of pricing under their FAQ and based on the type of search you run, your price will be determined accordingly. Basic background is $9 each.
Option 2: Trak-1.com is a stand alone service: $30 setup w/ $15 background.
Option 3: Volunteerselectplus.com (also ChoicePoint or LexisNexis - used by CVC above and LifeChurch.tv). Speaking with this company, with Church Mutual Insurance coverage, the $25 setup fee is waived and then $6.50 for the basic search and $11.20 to include Misdermeanors and Felonys.
Option 3 seems to be the best financially BUT having received a call back from Group/CVC, he told me that LexisNexis requires a minimum commitment of 300 checks per year. This has not been confirmed yet. I am waiting on an email from CVC to test drive their site for a few days to see what I think about the other resources. I still plan on following back up with LexisNexis regarding that minimum.
Goodluck!
