The issue of poverty is a big issue in this election and in the church. From my perspective, it often is dealt with by on a rather superficial basis (give them money). I wrestle with it every time I am approached in a parking lot by someone asking for money or see the guy standing at the end of the exit ramp (although, come to think of it, I don't see many of these people in Columbus any more; I see much more of them in California). 16% of American's Income is Government Assistance in 2009

This is pretty shocking. Apparently, in the first quarter of 2009, about 1 of of every dollars in income was due to Social Security, food stamps, unemployment insurance and health care. That's the highest amount since 1929 when the government first started keeping records. Not that those programs are bad. I just worry about long-term sustainability, and motivating people to support themselves.
