A free newsletter to help ministry leaders grow healthy churches

Purpose Driven Pastor

Why “good enough” is good enough

At Saddleback we would rather involve thousands of regular folks in ministry than have a perfect church run by a few elites. We’d like to be a model for other churches, so we aim for average people doing average activities in order to get extraordinary results. That’s how the typical McDonalds succeeds while being staffed by high school students. The system works; it doesn’t require unusual talent.

The Power of Cheerful Giving

If you’ve seen the movie, The Blind Side, then you know Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy. They are the couple who adopted Michael Oher, now an American football player with the Baltimore Ravens, into their home when he was a struggling high school student living in foster homes.

The Tuohy’s have a new book out this week in which they discuss giving as a way of life. They sum up their giving philosophy with The Popcorn Theory -- “You can’t help everyone, but you can try to help the hot ones who pop right up in front of your face.”

  • We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through Christ.

It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.
    2 Corinthians 3:4-6 (NLT)

Notes & Quotes

  • “… There is no power on earth like unconditional love. And I think that if you offered that to your child, I mean, you’re 90 percent of the way home. There may be days when you don’t feel like it — it’s not uncritical love; that’s a different animal — but to know you can always come back, that is huge in life. That takes you a long, long way. And I would say that every parent out there that can extend that to their child at an early age, it’s going to make for a better human being." – Warren Buffett, Yahoo! News and The Huffington Post (July 8, 2010)
  • "The Bible was written in tears, and to tears it yields its best treasures." -- A.W. Tozer
  • “Nothing shows a man's character more than what he laughs at.”  -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
  • Only 54 percent of cancer patients in a U.S. National Cancer Institute study said they were told they had cancer in a doctor’s office. Eighteen percent said they were told over the phone. Thirty-nine percent said no one was with them when the news was given. (Source: USA Today, July 9, 2010)
